A 24-Hour Shot That Changed Everything
In 2010, Mike Slonina’s mother was diagnosed with a potentially malignant brain tumor. Fueled by a desire to make a difference, Mike, a passionate basketball player, began training daily for an unprecedented challenge: shooting a basketball for 24 consecutive hours to raise funds for the MGH Cancer Center and promote early detection.
On April 9, 2011, Mike became the first and only person to achieve this feat, shooting 73.2% from mid-range and three-point areas despite a nerve-damaged ankle, a cut finger, and a torn wrist. His story, covered by ESPN Boston and picked up nationally, resonated globally, inspiring cancer patients, survivors, and supporters worldwide. This event, named A Shot For Life, laid the foundation for our 501c3 organization.
Since then, AS? ASFL has grown into a force in sports fundraising, uniting hundreds of athletes, first responders, and communities through events like the ASFL Gauntlet and Battle of the Badges. Mike is a recognized World Record Holder on RecordSetter.com, and ASFL continues to fund groundbreaking glioblastoma research at Massachusetts General Hospital, driven by the same resilience and passion that started it all.
